MIDDLETOWN >> The St. Vincent Mustangs erupted for eight runs in the top of the third inning to snap a 1-1 tie and went on to defeat Middletown’s Mustangs 9-2 in a non-league varsity baseball game called after six innings because of darkness on Wednesday at Wes Martin Field.

Middletown fell to 0-3 on the season.

“We missed some key outs early in that inning,” Middletown coach Brad Holt said of the eight-run third. “Tyler was on the mound way too long … he threw 49 pitches in that inning.”

Losing pitcher Tyler Holt, working in relief of starter Albert Ruske, surrendered all eight of St. Vincent’s runs in the third although only three were earned. He struck out four and walked four in two innings. Cody Chorjel finished up with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out five and walking two.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Middletown’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth.

Chorjel accounted for half of Middletown’s hits by going 2-for-2 with a RBI. Chris Davis had a double and Stephen Amos singled.

Middletown is home Friday to play Berean Christian of Walnut Creek at 3:30 p.m.
