LAKEPORT >> The fishing was good but not great on Friday as the Future Pro Team Classic bass tournament opened on Clear Lake.
Under sunny skies and with the temperature close to 80 degrees on a late winter afternoon, the tournament fishermen racked up some solid weights on the first day of the three-day tournament, one that will reward its winning team with a new, fully-rigged Ranger bass boat package worth in the neighborhood of $35,000. Other top teams receive cash payouts.
Following second-round action today, the field will be cut from 80 to 15 teams for Sunday’s final round. Weigh-ins today and Sunday begin at 3 p.m. in Lakeport’s Library Park.
The first-round leaders after Friday’s action were the father-and-son team of Kevin and Kirby Wallace of Granite Bay with 34.47 pounds. That total was anchored by the big fish on day one, a 9.95-pounder caught by Kirby Wallace.
Holding down second place after round one was Justin Nelson and Tony Koreglos with 29.77 pounds. Jay and Ken Riggs were third with 22.20 pounds, Scott Burke and Garrett Maddex were fourth with 20.19 pounds, and Gerald and Jimmy Clawson were fifth with 19.99 pounds.
The top 15 teams in the field weighed in more than 15 pounds on day one.
The weather forecat for Saturday and Sunday calls for clear skies and temperatures into the low-80s.
