SACRAMENTO >> Nine members of the Upper Lake Junior Cougars Wrestling Club took part in the PAL State Championship/Tournament of Champions Qualifier on Saturday at Foothill High School in Sacramento.

Gabriella Fernandez brought home the lone first-place medal for the Cougars by winning her division with a 4-0 records, including a pin and two major decisions.

Jose Fernandez III added a second-place medal in the varsity 116-pound bracket, going 3-1 with one pin. His lone loss came on a takedown in overtime.

Another second went to Aiden Dancer in the varsity 55-pound division with a 2-1 record. He also competed in the JV bracket but did not place.

Finishing third were Donavan Fernandez, Alexis Peregrina and Hayden Fowler. Gage Faalelea came in fourth and Cody Banks was fifth.

Adriana Lopez won her first match by pin in the varsity 108-pound bracket but lost her next two matches.

During the Rocky Mountain Nationals on Feb. 28 in Reno, Dancer again wrestled in two divisions, taking first in the 49-pound rookie bracket for ages 7-9 and second in the 8-and-under 50-pound division.

Peregrina finished third in the 6-and-under heavyweight bracket, Jose Fernandez III went 2-2 to take fourth in the 15-and-under 109-pound division, and Hayden Fowler placed fourth in the 95-pound rookie bracket for ages 7-9 after falling in quadruple overtime in the third-place match.

Jose Fernandez III returns to action Saturday in the NorCal Tournament of Champions at Del Oro High School in Loomis.
