COBB >> And a freshman shall lead them.
Matt Wotherspoon fired a 10-over-par round of 78 and the Kelseyville Knights beat four other teams in a non-conference golf match on Thursday afternoon at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain.
Wotherspoon, one of two freshmen on the Kelseyville squad, also carded a birdie on the par-68 Adams Springs course, which he is quite familiar with after winning the Lake County Junior there last summer.
“There’s no place like home,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “It worked to our advantage.”
Kelseyville, a member of the Coastal Mountain Conference South, finished with a team score of 369 to beat CMC North members Willits (376), Fort Bragg (451), Mendocino and Point Arena. Mendocino and Point Arena were both incomplete because they didn’t have enough golfers.
“Sometimes it’s hard for a freshman to adjust to being the No. 1 golfer, but Matt has done a good job with it,” Berry said of a Knights squad that also features seniors Joe Tannous, who fired a round of 89 with two birdies; Sophie Sells, who finished with 90; and freshman Israel Gonzales, who had a 95.
The lowest rounds posted by the Knights’ opponents were a pair of 90s from Mendocino’s Connor Woods and Point Arena’s Andrus Aceves.
Kelseyville’s golfers return to action Monday during the annual Hilmar Invitational at Stevinson Ranch Golf Club in Stevinson. The Knights open their CMC South schedule on Wednesday at Adobe Creek Golf Course in Petaluma where Clear Lake, which has officially joined the conference, will take part.
