Clearlake >> Highlands Senior Service Center (HSSC) is hosting a March for Meals event on March 26.

Activities will include an open house and informational booths by vendors from the community who provide services to seniors. A “March for Meals” will be held that morning, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the walk commencing at 9 a.m. from the senior center, located at 3245 Bowers Ave.

Community members are invited to march along with senior center staff, clients and volunteers as they make their way from the senior center to the Burns Valley Mall and back. Marchers can pick up their pledge packets at the senior center prior to the event. HSSC is asking that marchers gather pledges from family, friends, businesses, houses of worship, fraternal organizations and other organizations in the community. Businesses are encouraged to enter individuals or teams to represent them on the march. And those who can’t join the march on the can still gather pledges and donations from the community for the event. All monies should be turned into HSSC by March 26.

As an added bonus, all donations raised during the months of March and April are eligible for a dollar-for-dollar match being provided by supporter Charlotte Griswold.

March For Meals is an annual national campaign to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on a local level. Senior nutrition programs across the United States promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. The campaign takes place in the month of March because it was during this month that the law was enacted that included senior nutrition programs in the Older Americans Act.

The senior center is a registered nonprofit organization, which means that all of the funds needed to provide services to the seniors in the community comes from grants and donations, and that all donations are tax deductible. HSSC provides congregate dining, Meals on Wheels for qualified clients and information and assistance on all manner of services and concerns that affect persons aged 60 years and older. The March for Meals is one of their biggest fundraisers each year.

Call HSSC at 994-3051 for more information on the March for Meals, or for information on any of the other services and programs that HSSC provides. Stop by their office at 3245 Bowers Ave. in Clearlake Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
