LOS ANGELES >> Law enforcement officials in Los Angeles apprehended a fugitive Sunday night who had walked away from a minimum-security detail in Lake County.
James Bellino, an inmate from the California Correctional Center, disappeared on Friday night from Konocti Conservation Camp, where he was assigned as part of an inmate firefighting team.
According to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Bellino, 37, was at the facility on Friday evening, but could not be found during a head count later that night.
Bellino had been placed under minimum security despite an arrest on several charges, including causing injury to a spouse or cohabitant and issuing threats to cause injury or death. He had been scheduled for release in July of 2016.
Several law enforcement agencies, along with Cal Fire, were involved in the search over the weekend. The escapee was taken into custody by the Special Service Unit and Fugitive Apprehension Team.
The CDCR did not initially release any information on Bellino’s condition at the time of capture.
According to a CDCR statement, Bellino will not be reassigned to the firefighting crew.
