Five karate students at Lake County Martial Arts in Lakeport brought home awards from the Golden State Karate Association March Open competition last weekend in Manteca. They were (back from left) Hunter Melvin of Kelseyville, Gabe Collins of Lucerne, Armando Maldonado of Cobb and (front row, from left) Nice siblings David and Lilianna Cruz. Melvin, a red belt with two striples, finished second in sparring and third in forms; Collins, a red belt with two stripes, took home first- and third-place awards; Maldonado, a red belt with two stripes, was first in traditional weapons, second in sparring and third in forms; and David and Lilianna, both orange belts, received first-timer awards.
