UPPER LAKE >> LaShaye Taylor homered for a fourth straight game, teammate Sierra Fugate added a three-run shot and the Upper Lake Cougars won their fifth game in a row with a 15-2 rout of the Potter Valley Bearcats on Friday afternoon in Upper Lake.
Taylor, a senior shortstop, led off the bottom of the second with a solo blast to left field to tie the score at 1-1. It was her fifth home run of the season in Upper Lake’s eighth game.
“She took a week off after basketball season and came back strong,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said.
Fugate, a senior catcher, hammered her first home run of the season to deep center field in the bottom of the third inning to give the Cougars a 5-1 lead.
“Those two can whack it,” Coburn said.
Upper Lake (6-2) put the game away with a 10-run bottom of the fourth, sending 15 batters to the plate in the inning. The game was stopped because of the 10-run rule after Potter Valley failed to score in the top of the fifth.
Hannah Johnson went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Cougars. Fugate (2-for-2) finished with four RBIs and also doubled while Taylor (2-for-2) drove in a total of three runs. Megan Franco also had two hits and a RBI.
Winning pitcher Julia Mooney went the distance, scattering three hits, striking out two and walking five.
