LAKEPORT >> The Lakeport-Ukiah Challenge is kicking off the racing season with an Easter hop this weekend.

Drivers will get a chance to test and tune their cars today at Lakeport Speedway in preparation for Saturday’s season-opening race. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for a racing card that includes the Taco Bell Bombers, Budweiser Outlaws, Jammers, mini-stocks and Bandoleros. Fans age 5 and up pay only $5 for admission. There also will be an Easter egg hunt for children.

Racing is a family-involved sport for local promoter David Furia. When the races start, the whole Furia family is busy working at the track or racing on it.

“My family is involved, but racing wouldn’t happen in this community without the support of the other families that share the load,” Furia said. “We have generations of families that come out every weekend to take on many of the tasks that make racing happen and I couldn’t appreciate them more. We also have generations of fans who come out to see their favorite racers on the track. It’s not unusual to see grandparents, parents and kids watching the races together. Racing truly is a family sport.”

Ukiah Speedway will hold its own test and tune on April 10 before its first official race on April 11. The Taco Bell Bombers, Jammers, mini-stock, modifieds and Legends will compete in the inaugural 2015 race. Gates open at 5 p.m.
