HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE >> Kelseyville High School has the third-best record in the Coastal Mountain Conference South golf standings this season behind St. Vincent and Middletown. Even so, the Knights had more than enough firepower to easily beat the four teams that make up the CMC North on Thursday afternoon during a non-conference match at Hidden Valley Lake Golf Course.
Kelseyville’s low four scorers combined for a total of 375 to easily beat Willits (415), Mendocino (431), Fort Bragg (462) and Point Arena (462) on the par-72 Hidden Valley Lake course. Fort Bragg won the fifth-man tiebreaker for fourth place.
“Maybe we should move to the North,” Kelseyville coach John Berry joked.
Only one golfer managed to shoot in the 70s on Thursday and it was Kelseyville High School freshman Matt Wotherspoon, who birdied three of Hidden Valley’s 18 holes en route to a 6-over-par 78. The next lowest round was Connor Woods’ 89 for Mendocino.
Other Kelseyville scores had Joe Tannous at 97, Sophie Sells at 99 with one birdie, and Israel Gonzales at 101 with one birdie.
Brandon Thiel led runner-up Willits with a 91, Andres Aceves of Point Arena had a 96, and Callen Mix of Fort Bragg carded a 110.
Kelseyville’s golfers return to Hidden Valley Lake on Wednesday, this time with the rest of the CMC South, for a conference match at 1:30 p.m.
“It was just a chance to get us a match here so that we’re a little more familiar with the golf course,” Berry said of the Knights.
