NAPA >> Mavis Pyorre of Terrace Middle School, a first-year wrestler, finished 2-2 and just missed out on advancing to the medal round Saturday during the California Girls Middle School State Wrestling Championships in Napa.
One of 32 wrestlers competing in the 95-pound bracket, Pyorre got off to good start by scoring seven unanswered points in a come-from-behind 7-5 decision over the No. 7 seed in her opening-round match. She lost to the eventual state champion in her next match, falling 7-2. It was the closest match the state champion had all day as her other wins came by pin or major decision.
Pyorre bounced back with a 4-2 decision over the No. 6 seed in the consolation bracket. With a berth in the medal round at stake, Pyorre lost to the eventual fifth-place medalist 5-4.
Medals were awarded to the top six finishers and Pyorre ended up tied for seventh.
“She did awesome,” Terrace Middle School head coach Steve Fisher said.
