LAKEPORT >> Middletown High School is still the power in Lake County track. Both its varisty boys’ and girls’ squad recorded victories on Wednesday during the annual Lake County Meet at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport. Lower Lake did win the junior varsity boys’ division to deprive the Mustangs of a complete sweep.
While the meet itself ran pretty much like clockwork, according to Clear Lake coach and meet director Garrett Wankel, there were a couple of glitches. Lower Lake’s team bus broke down on its way to Lakeport and most of the Trojans’ squad was late in arriving at Don Owens Stadium. Also, longtime meet starter Bob Mayer sustained an injury during a fall and was replaced by former Middletown coach Louise Owens.
“Things went great as far as the actual running of the events and I had a sufficient amount of help,” Wankel said. “It was a beautiful day and the kids were excited to get their second meet at home. It’s nice when you have the crowd cheering for you.”
