LAKEPORT >> The Lakeport Lions Club donated $1,000 to Operation Tango Mike (OTM), a nonprofit organization that sends monthly care packages to military personnel overseas. The donation will help purchase supplies and shipping fees.
OTM’s founder, Ginny Craven, told club members that they did not have enough funds in the group’s bank account to ship the April care packages prior to the donation.
“We are so grateful to the Lions for your support,” Craven said. “We didn’t know how we would ship the care packages in April before you stepped up. Your timing was perfect.”
OTM hosts monthly packing parties, preparing 65-85 care packages. The supplies are now being sent to nine countries, with many of the soldiers being in very remote areas. Costs run more than $2,000 every month to pack and ship.
The volunteer group recently celebrated its 12th anniversary.
May is National Military Appreciation Month and the Lakeport Lions are issuing a challenge to other service organizations and civic groups to match their donation to OTM.
“While we go about our days, there are still people serving our country in very hostile locations and without the comforts of home,” club member Kandee Stolesen stated.
Donations can be sent to Operation Tango Mike, 5216 Piner Court, Kesleyville, CA 95451.
