Upper Lake >> A man is in police custody after he allegedly chased and swung a machete at several people on Sunday.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) deputies responded to the call on the 14000 block of E. Highway 20 at about 12:18 p.m. When they arrived, they reportedly spotted Devin Ray Walker of Upper Lake with a machete. When a deputy told Walker, 23, to stop he threw the machete in the opposite direction of the deputy and ran toward it, out of view from the deputy, according to LCSO Lt. Steve Brooks.
A chase began, and Walker continued to run until he entered a canal and swam across, toward the Reclamation Cutoff. Walker was apprehended a short time later, approximately 1 mile from where the incident started, Brooks stated.
Witnesses told deputies that Walker set up a tent on their property without permission. They asked him to leave several times, which he allegedly refused. Just prior to contacting the LCSO, they moved all of his belongings toward the front of their property and told Walker again that he had to leave, Brooks said. Walker allegedly became extremely upset and started yelling incoherently. He then armed himself with a machete and began to swing it at several people while chasing them.
Walker was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and for an unrelated warrant. He was transported to the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility and booked.
