The Clear Lake Trowel and Trellis Garden Club awarded Lindee Jones, of Middletown, and Blair Brookes, of Kelseyville, with this year’s scholarships. Jones will receive the Carol Kesey Memorial Scholarship, and Brookes will receive the Elizabeth Whitehead Scholarship. These scholarships are to be used to continue their education in an Agriculture/Horticulture related field.

Both students were active in FFA in high school and are on the Dean’s List at their Universities. They have volunteered countless hours of community service activities both during high school and in college.

Jones is attending Chico State University and will be attaining a BA in Agriculture Science and Crop Science. At Shasta College she lived and worked on the college farm, learning by hands on experience. She has interned with the Lake County Farm Bureau, and a local fertilizer and crop protection company. Her plans are to become an Agricultural Pest Control Advisor.

“A PCA’s goal is to work with growers to aid in a successful crop and help get a greater return on investment and to more effectively feed the world’s expanding population,” Jones said. “By aiding agriculturalists, it will allow me to help consumers get safe food products at an affordable price.”

Brookes is attending California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. She is pursuing a degree in Agribusiness and then plans to attend law school to work in Agricultural policy.

“With a population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, I believe that driven individuals, who are passionate about agriculture, are responsible for ensuring that food security increases to counteract hunger that will result from our planet’s expanding population,” Brookes said. “As a policy maker, I will be responsible for creating legislation that will fit the needs of both consumers and producers regarding current issues including water rights, animal welfare, and food safety.”

In the past the club members made holiday wreaths out of beautiful, fresh foliage to earn the funds to reward these hard working and competent young leaders. The Clear Lake Trowel and Trellis Club thanks all community members who purchased and enjoyed these wreaths

This year the Trowel and Trellis Garden Club is having a Hidden Gardens of Lake County Tour on May 30 from 10-4. The club hopes community members will also be generous in attending the Hidden Garden Tour fund raiser to support our scholarship efforts. Tickets are now available. Funds will also benefit student gardens in the county. For more information about the tour ask a club member or call 279-0192.
