LOWER LAKE >> Not even all the construction going on at the nearby Gordon Sadler Field football bleachers could slow down Isazah King and the Lower Lake High School varsity boys’ track team on Wednesday during a five-team Coastal Mountain Conference meet.
King, Lower Lake’s multi-talented three-sport athlete, blew away the field in the 100- and 200-meter sprints as the Trojans won a wild battle with the Fort Bragg Timberwolves 125-120. Willits, Clear Lake and Rincon Valley Christian also took part in the meet.
“It really went well,” Lower Lake coach Koda Livingston said of juggling the many tasks that go into running a track meet despite all the nearby construction work. “We had a lot of great help from parents, teachers and students (from all the participating schools) and made it work.”
Lower Lake athletes combined for 15 first-place finishes between the varsity boys’, girls’ and JV boys’ squads. While the JV and varsity boys came in first, Fort Bragg won the girls’ division going away despite a great day by Lower Lake’s Gabby Jauregui, who won the 200 meters (29.48 seconds) and the 400 (1 minute, 7.81 seconds).
While King was running away from the field in the 100 and 200 in varsity boys’ action, teammate David Fernandez added second-place finishes in both events and a first in the 400 meters.
“He told me he wanted to try the 400 and he did … and won,” Livingston said.
Everardo Chavez gave the Trojans a boost in the distance events, taking second in the 1,600 and 3,200 and third in the 800.
Lower Lake’s JV boys were led by Charles Powell, who won the 100 (12.27), 200 (25.30) and long jump (17 feet, 9½ inches). He also tied teammate Romeo Barrientos for first in the high jump at 4-8.
Other Lower Lake winners were Johnathon Kincaid in the 800 (2:45.48), Bobby Landergraf in the 300 hurdles (57.67), Francisco Rocuant in the 3,200 (13:19.51), Virgil Ellis in the shotput (30-1), and Tristan Leard in the discus (60-5).
Lower Lake’s JV boys piled up 203 points in the team standings.
Next up for Lower Lake is the CMC Championships on May 16 in St. Helena.
