KELSEYVILLE >> Aliza Atkins knocked in two runs on her 18th birthday and Rachel Wingler pitched a three-hitter as the Clear Lake Cardinals built a big lead early and cruised past the Kelseyville Knights 8-1 in North Central League I softball action on Friday afternoon in Kelseyville.
It didn’t appear as though the game would make it past five innings after the Cardinals, taking advantage of a handful of Kelseyville mistakes, jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings. But to their credit, the Knights (4-8 league, 6-12 overall) buckled down on defense and limited league-leading Clear Lake (9-1, 13-5) to a single run the rest of the way.
Riley Goff led off the Kelseyville seventh with a single, advanced all the way to third on a passed ball, and scored from third on Morgan Profitt’s groundout to break up Wingler’s shutout. The Knights had runners at first and second when Wingler struck out her 11th batter to end it.
Clear Lake went up 1-0 in the first on Atkins’ RBI groundout. The Cardinals added two more runs in the second on a throwing error and a wild pitch. They broke the game open with a four-run fourth that could have been worse for Kelseyville had not the Knights turned a double play during the uprising. Alicia Ledesma (3-for-3) brought home the first run of the inning with a ground-rule double and Atkins followed with a RBI single to make it 5-0. A wild pitch with the bases loaded an a run-scoring error pushed the Cardinals’ advantage to 7-0.
Until Goff’s leadoff single leading off the the seventh, Kelseyville’s only other hit was a Tymeka Green single in the bottom of the third.
Losing pitcher Profitt struck out four and walked five. After a somewhat shaky start she settled down and pitched effectively over the final four innings.
