SACRAMENTO >> Grace Ott, a Junior at Clear Lake High School was commissioned Saturday, April 25, as a member of the Regional Youth Council (RYC) of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a covenantal community of more than 60 congregations and approximately 6,000 participating members.
The mission of the RYC is to foster personal and spiritual growth in both RYC members and all youth in Northern California and Nevada. The RYC seeks to encourage developing leadership skills and to promote integrity through ethical decision making. RYC members serves as role models and leaders to the Chi Rho (6-8 grade) and CYF (9-12 grade) youth participating in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) by creating and implementing programming for these age groups.
RYC council members are chosen based on character, commitment to service and personal growth. Ott is the first youth to be nominated from Lake County in over 30 years. Nominations can come from Eureka and Redding in the north, to Pacific Grove in the southwest, to Porterville in the south, and to Reno/Sparks in the east and anywhere in between. In recognition of their service RYC members receive scholarship money to Chapman University in southern California, a historic Disciple school, if they choose to attend there.
Ott is active in youth work through United Christian Parish in Lakeport and part of a team preparing for a Blue Theology Mission Trip to Monterey Bay in July. What is Blue Theology? Grace sums up, “Blue Theology focuses on how we can keep what God gave us healthy through ocean stewardship.” The team will be doing beach clean-up, as well as participating in LiMPETS (Long-term Monitoring Program and Experiential Training for Students). Each person on our ten member Mission Team needs to raise $400 to participate in the mission trip and donations are welcome.
Donations can be sent to UCP at 745 N Brush Street, Lakeport CA 95453. If you’d like to make a donation in honor of Grace’s commission please write Grace Ott on the memo line, or for the whole team simply write Blue Theology. Checks can be made to UCP.
