Lake County >> The Clear Lake Trowel and Trellis Garden Club’s (CLTTGC) Garden Tour is May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit seven gardens ranging from Kelseyville to Upper Lake. Once you have purchased your ticket with map included you can start your tour at any garden location. Featured on the tour is Dr. Benjamin’s garden, located in Upper Lake.
Romantic English cottage -style gardens meander around the Queen Anne Victorian home built in the late 1899 by the Morrison family. The home and gardens are surrounded by lush certified organic Sauvignon Blanc vineyards.
The garden, partially shaded by 60 year old walnut trees, includes many beautiful old roses as well as some new David Austin English roses. The camellias and hydrangeas are original to the house and all other trees and shrubs are common to the Victorian period in which the house was built.
The historic California Coastal Redwood tree was planted as a memorial on the day WWI ended. Statues commissioned by famous artists are among the many other visual pleasures this historic garden offers. One of these statues is of Balto, a jet black Siberian husky sled dog that led its team on the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome, which is commemorated buy the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The zoological elements to the gardens include an African Crested Porcupine, Ringtail Lemurs, a Grevi Zebra and 10 French Percheron Show Horses.
The home owners also plan to have music playing through the garden as a concert pianist entertains the tour participants.
