LAKEPORT >> Wilda Shock, chairwoman of the Lakeport Economic Development Advisory Committee, consider public projects that include rotating art exhibits in Lakeport, as well as murals on building exteriors, important in the economic development of the area. Two such projects have been proposed and are under consideration by LEDAC.

The projects are still in the discussion phase and no direct action was taken at the committee’s most recent meeting, other than to encourage continued development of the proposals. Consensus was reached by the committee to continue pursuing the projects.

“Arts and culture add value and improve the quality of life in a community,” Shock explained.

The proposals, which were not explored for this story, will be discussed at LEDAC’s June 10 meeting, in order to allow time to refine concepts and research costs. Chris King, the artist who developed the proposals, was not in attendance because he is finishing up project in Southern California. King will present criteria for implementing each project during that meeting.

Several members of the committee commented on the success of the chalkboard wall that was temporarily located on the side of Lakeport’s Senior Center’s Meals On Wheels thrift store last August.

The purpose of the chalkboard was to garner positive feedback from the community, by having members of the public write a response to “What I live about Lake County is ______.”

A desire to do a similar project was discussed, however “residents who worked on that … acknowledged the labor-intensive aspects of keeping the wall ‘fresh’ and free of unwanted graffiti.”

“The chalkboard wall concept of presenting positive messages about Lakeport and Lake County might be pursued through other means,” Shock said.
