Avenue of Flags: On Memorial Day, May 25, the flags of fallen veterans will fly in display at cemeteries throughout Lake County. Lake County Veterans Memorial-Avenue of Flags Association, with the help of volunteers, will install the flagpoles and mount the large flags along the avenues of county cemeteries. Avenue of Flags will be presented at the following cemeteries: Hartley Cemetery in Lakeport, Upper Lake Cemetery, Kelseyville Cemetery and Lower Lake Cemetery. Installation of flagpoles and flags will begin at 7 a.m., weather permitting. Takedown of flags and flagpoles will occur at 4 p.m.

Military honors: In honor of Memorial Day, the Lake County Honors Team will provide military honors at the following dates, times and locations.

On May 23, an honors ceremony will be held at Kelseyville Cemetery beginning at 9 a.m.

On Memorial Day, May 25, the honors team will depart from the Bruno’s Shop Smart parking lot in Lakeport at 7:45 a.m. An honors ceremony will be held at Middletown Ceremony at 9 a.m. A ceremony at Lower Lake Cemetery will begin at 10:15 a.m., followed immediately by a ceremony at Lower Lake Bridge. A ceremony in Upper Lake will commence at 11:15 a.m. A ceremony at the Kelseyville Veterans Bridge will be held at noon, followed by a ceremony at Hartley Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Lakeport

Parade: Lakeport’s Annual Memorial Day Parade salutes fallen members of the armed forces. This year’s parade will fill Main Street at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 23. The parade route travels from the Lake County Fairgrounds on Martin Street, entering Main Street at Martin Street and travels north to 10th Street. The judges’ stand will be in front of the special districts office across from the museum between Second and Third streets. Parade judging will take place in front of the Lake County Museum.

The chamber requests that members of the public honor the No Parking signs, which will be posted on Main Street from First Street to Fourth Street, calling for no parking during the hours of 10 a.m. to noon, on May 23. This area will allow unobstructed views of the parade for spectators.

Breakfast: The annual 4-H Pancake Breakfast at Natural High School on Main Street will be hosted from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday by the Lakeport Kiwanis who also sponsor a two-day craft faire at the same location and opens at 9 a.m.

VFW flag ceremony: Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2015 is in need of volunteers to help place more than 750 flags in Hartley Cemetery in Lakeport. Anyone who would like to help with flag placement should meet at Hartley Cemetery, on Shady Lane off Hill Road East, at 9 a.m. on Sunday.For questions contact Larry Mick at 272-5615.

Lower Lake

Parade: On Sunday, May 24, Lower Lake holds its Lower Lake Daze Parade and Pet Parade beginning at 11 a.m. with activities until 3 p.m. The Lower Lake Community Action Group plans to include an old time barbecue, craft vendors, face painting, kids games, pony rides, music during the afternoon and a raffle. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit community projects. Following the parade, all activities are in the Russell Rustici Community Park, behind the Brick Hall.

KELSEYVILLE

Barbecue: Assemblyman Bill Dodd will host an outdoor Memorial Day barbecue event at Chacewater Winery & Olive Mill on Saturday honoring Woman of the Year Denise Rushing. The event will feature music, wines and barbecue at the Kelseyville facility from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

General admission tickets cost $25, and sponsorship levels range from $150 to $1,000. More information is available at billdodd.com/events, or call 337-5994.

MIDDLETOWN

Memorial: The Middletown Cemetery District will hold Memorial Day services to honor fallen veterans on Monday, May 25 at 9 a.m. on the cemetery grounds at 16357 Butts Canyon Road at the Mary Hardesty Building, on the top of the hill for the festivities and refreshments where parking is provided. Ceremonies include flowered wreaths, made by the Middletown High School floral design class.

4-H is in charge of the flag ceremony and the Girl Scouts Troop 10676 will help with wreath placement and programs. Supervisor and veteran Jim Comstock will be the guest speaker and read the names of veterans buried in the Middletown Cemetery. Jose Simon 111 Tribal Chair will read the veteran names for the Middletown Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians.

Linda Diehl Darms will act as Mistress of Ceremonies. The invocation will be by Voris Brumfield and benediction will be given by Pastor Claudia Listman from the Middletown Community United Methodist Church. Boyd Green, retired veteran, and Bill Vann will do the church calling and Taps and the Military Funeral Honors Team of Lake County will perform the 21-gun salute. They will be ushered in by the Patriot Guard Riders. David Neft will provide the sound and key board accompanying Kathleen Escude vocalist.

Spring Valley

Barbecue: Spring Valley Property Owners Association (POA) will have its annual “Chicken Que” Saturday at the Spring Valley Community Center.

Bar opens at 4:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Chef Bob Keyes will prepare the chicken barbacue. Also served will be Donna Barker’s “famous” macaroni salad, along with barbecue beans, corn salad and fruit Jell-O salad. After dinner, Spring Valley’s own Broken Ground will provide dance music.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children. The Spring Valley Community Center is located at 3000 Wolf Creek Road.
