LAKE COUNTY >> On April 11 the fifth annual Advocacy Walk was held at Library Park in celebration of Child Abuse Prevention month. Parents, educators, administrators and supporters marched down Lakeport Main Street in superhero costumes to raise awareness and help prevent child abuse. Each year more than 6.3 million children are affected by abuse or neglect in the United States.

The Advocacy Walk was followed by a superhero themed Children’s Festival that attracted over 300 people. Families enjoyed the theme of, “Be a Hero and Protect Lake County Children,” and participated in activities provided by local organizations.

Additionally, throughout the month of April the annual placemat coloring contest was held. Students from the Lake County Office of Education’s after school programs were asked to submit a drawing of their personal superheroes. The first, second and third place winners had their artwork featured on placemats at Lakeport’s Taco Bell and Clearlake’s Main Street Bar and Grill. On April 22, the three winners were honored at a ceremony at Lakeport Taco Bell. Each of the winners earned a free Taco Bell lunch, a gift certificate, and a package of art supplies.

Finally, local childcare programs and elementary school programs participated in the Paper Doll Project. Nearly 2,000 paper dolls were distributed for teachers to use in superhero themed guided art projects. The colorfully decorated paper dolls were displayed in local business throughout the county during the months of March and April. Over 100 local business and agencies display the dolls in their storefronts and buildings.

Childcare Planning Council Coordinator Laurie Allen said, “We’re grateful to our community for their continual support of our efforts during Childcare Prevention Month. The number of cases of child abuse and neglect in Lake County are heartbreaking. Protecting children is everyone’s superpower and together, we can prevent child abuse and make a real difference in Lake County.”

Research shows that children who receive quality early care and education are more likely to graduate high school, go to college and own a home. They are also less likely to need special interventions and experience juvenile delinquency.
