Lake County >> Road crews spent most of Tuesday morning cleaning up debris left from a big rig that overturned before dawn.

The driver and solo occupant was heading westbound on Highway 175 — Hopland at about 4:50 a.m. when he fell asleep at the wheel, drifted off the road and onto an embankment, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Engle said at the scene.

The big rig and two trailers overturned, spilling asphalt and somewhere between 35 to 45 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway and into a ditch.

Engle said the driver did not sustain any injuries, which Engle attributes to use of the seat belt. Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be involved in the crash.

Caltrans workers directed single-lane traffic at about 9 a.m., and the road was cleared by Tuesday afternoon.
