BUCKINGHAM >> Chris Fisher of Roseville, a former basketball coach at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport, returned to Lake County on Saturday and successfully defended his title in the Lake County Senior Amateur Championship at Buckingham Golf and Country Club.
The Lake County Senior is a one-day, 18-hole tournament for amateur golfers age 50 and older.
Fisher opened play in a most stellar way as he recorded seven straight pars, birdied the par-4 eighth hole, and then made another par on the ninth hole to shoot a 1-under-par 35. His front-nine performance propelled him to a six-stroke lead over Leonard Lea of Clear Lake Riviera and a seven-stroke margin over the Lakeport duo of Jerry Pangle and Craig Kinser.
Fisher was unable to continue his under-par play during the course of the back nine and carded an inward 4-over-par 40 for a total of 75 and a seven stroke victory over Kinser.
Kinser shot a second-nine 40 for a score of 82. Lea ended up in solo third place with an 83 while Pangle, the 2014 Senior Golfer of the Year, finished in fourth place with 85.
Senior net
In the senior net flight, Ed Jacobsen of Lakeport carded a 71 and found himself tied atop the leader board with Dr. Bob Jolin of Lakeport. Jacobsen won the sudden-death playoff against Jolin, which lasted just one hole, by recording a net par.
Don Joseph of Kelseyville finished in third place with 74. Tied at 77 were Scot Lamanuzzi of Buckingham, Steve Olson of Riviera Heights and Alan Mathews of Lakeport.
Rounding out the top seven was the trio of Ted Knowles of Kelseyville, Ron Garcia of Clear Lake Riviera and Manny Mendoza of Buckingham.
Seventeen golfers competed in this year’s tournament. The next event on the Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit is the Partners Better Ball Tournament, which is scheduled for June 27-28 at Buckingham. Entries are available by contacting the pro shop at 279-4863.
