Lake County >> The Lake County Horse Council (LCHC) has compiled information from various agencies in order for horse and animal owners to be disaster ready.

As summer approaches and the California drought continues, most Lake County residents are probably aware of the increased risk of wild fire.

But no matter what the disaster, people and their animals are affected. Local emergency plans may be limited to evacuating people, and emergency shelters for humans and may deny admission to pets for health and safety reasons. Horses and other large animals require specialized transport and holding areas, which may be difficult or impossible to arrange during a sudden disaster.

The information is provided by CalFire, Lake Evacuation and Animal Control, Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, the University of California Davis and the Lake County Office of Emergency Services from the Spring Stay Safe 2015 event held March at Rancho de la Fuente. Information includes disaster preparedness, defensible space, evacuation information and safety for livestock and pets and can be found at http://www.lakecountyhorsecouncil.com/stay-safe-2015.html.
