KELSEYVILLE >> Former Kelseyville High School standout athlete Mary Brown had a busy and successful junior season at Baylor University, helping the Bears win their first Big 12 equestrian title since 2010.

In fact, Brown and teammate Charlotte Green each scored points early in the horsemanship competition during the Big 12 Championship final against Kansas State to clinch the team’s 11-8 victory.

During the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) Championships in mid-April at Waco, Texas, No. 2-seeded Baylor made it as far as the semifinals before losing 10-6 to South Carolina. Trying for their first NCEA title since 2012, the Bears defeated Oklahoma State in the quarterfinal round thanks in part to Brown’s head-to-head win over her Oklahoma State counterpart.

Brown earned second-team honors on the Big 12 All-Academic team this season and was an honorable mention on the NCEA All-Academic Team.

Baylor’s equestrian squad opened the season with 11 straight victories. The Bears finished 14-5 overall.

Brown, a 2012 graduate of Kelseyville, is the daughter of Toni and Mike Brown of Kelseyville.
