Lakeport >> Black, foul smoke filled the air surrounding Timberline Disposal Thursday afternoon from a garbage fire inside the facility.
Lakeport Fire Protection District (LFPD) units arrived at the scene on Soda Bay Road shortly before 6 p.m., LFPD firefighter/paramedic Odell Landers said.
About 20 firefighters from LFPD, Kelseyville and Northshore fire protection districts responded to the incident.
LFPD showed up with three engines, a water tender and a ladder truck; Kelseyville sent a engine and an additional water tender, and Northshore arrived with a water tender and support team. Additionally, Clearlake Redi-Mix provided a private tender.
Firefighters were able to gain access through a locked gate and knocked down the fire within 20 minutes with no injuries reported.
Once the fire was contained, it took another two hours to complete the clean-up process, Landers said.
“It was lots of mop up and overhaul” with specialized equipment, he said.
Soda Bay Road was also at least partially closed off for about the same duration.
Firefighters are unsure of what set off the blaze and the investigation is ongoing.
“There was so much garbage and debris we are not sure what the cause of it was,” Lander said.
