Slow them down

Where is our local law enforcement? In about the last 30 days there have been two people killed in North Lakeport, two killed in Northshore area, and now two more killed in Lower Lake. This in addition to the other unknown critters killed, my neighbors dog, and my two pet ducks. (Thanks to the Scott family for giving my two pet ducks a decent burial, which I was going to do anyway after their lifeless bodies would hopefully get the Lakeshore Blvd., drivers to slow down).

How much time does a speeding ticket take to go thru the system including court? About an hour? How much revenue does it generate? Does radar enforcement slow down drivers? Yes! How much time does it take investigate a fatal accident? How much revenue does a fatal accident generate? Do fatal accidents slow down drivers? Apparently not!

Seems to me our officers time would be better spent writing speeding tickets than investigating fatal accidents. A special thank you to our local fish and game officers who do work radar when they have a chance. They certainly set a good example for our other local law enforcement officers to follow.

A big thanks

The CLHS Sober Grad Night 2015 was a huge success thanks to the generosity of our local businesses, private citizens and parents. As in years past, this community rose to the occasion and supported the Class of 2015 Sober Grad Committee in their goal to raise funds to put on an awesome celebration and commemorate this major milestone for all of our graduating seniors.

This year’s event was held at the Quail Run Fitness Center on May 29. The Graduates enjoyed a night of music provided by DJ Josh Brown and many fun activities such as Zumba, instructed by Marcy Gonzalez and Taylor White, a photo booth provided by Breanna Shay Photography as well swimming, racquet ball, walleyball, rock wall climbing, a mechanical bull, and human sized hamster balls just to name a few.

In addition to all the fun activities, our fund raising efforts combined with the amazing generosity of the community allowed for the seniors to receive some spectacular raffle prizes such as an iPad donated by Kathy Fowler Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Apple Watches, iPods, Kindle Fires, TV’s, microwaves and many other great items! One lucky senior even went home with a new car generously donated by Guy Strohmeier’s Auto Center.

On behalf of the Class of 2015 seniors and the Sober Grad Committee I would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to our local businesses, citizens and parents! It would be impossible to name everyone because the response to our donation request as well as the fundraising events was so great that the list would go on forever! Just please know we recognize and THANK each and every one of you for your support! Your donations allowed a group of dedicated parent volunteers to put on a memorable and more importantly SAFE celebration. None of this could have happened without your support!

Thank you all!

Marcy Harrison, CLHS Class of 2015 Sober Grad Chair

Just wrong

Mr. Kettenhofen’s letter to the editor on June 27’s opinion page is way off the mark. I know from previous letters from this gentleman he would like to lay all of today’s problems at the feet of liberals. But to suggest for one moment that the shooting in that Charleston church was the work of a liberal is just plain insane. Liberals embrace the diversity amongst us. They don’t try to eliminate it. They do not embrace the Confederate flag.

It is the closed conservative heart and mind that cannot accept those different from themselves; those of a different color, religion or lifestyle. For some reason they feel threatened by them. Afraid they will change the world as they know it. And they always use the word of God to explain their reasoning. God did not give us only Ten Commandments to live by; in the New Testament Jesus added two more. Love God, and love your neighbor as yourself.

I would like to suggest these last two are the most important to God. No one, not Mr. Kettenhofen, not me, can possibly understand the workings or the reasonings of God’s mind. He knows all, sees all and understands all. We do not. But I would like to make a suggestion that could possibly explain some of today’s diversity. When the earth was young there were not many people on it, so it would be important for them to have many children to populate it. But today the earth is becoming overpopulated. There is not enough to go around. The fact that some people are really greedy and grab way more than their share is not helping that fact. So maybe, just maybe God in his wisdom decided it would be a good idea to have more gay and lesbian people to try to stabilize the population growth. After all, they do not have children of their own, but they do make a loving and stable home for children whose natural parents cannot take care of them for some reason. As I said earlier I cannot possibly know what is in God’s mind, but is this not at least a sensible suggestion?

Yes Mr. Kettenhofen I am a liberal Democrat, so I know you will not agree with me. But please do not ever again suggest that liberals go around shooting people different to themselves. This is just plain nuts. Most of us are for gun control and loving our neighbors. Peace to you and everyone else.
