LAKEPORT >> The Lakeport Economic Development Committee (LEDAC) is considering proposals for two public arts projects.
The first project will consist of art exhibit displays in Lakeport City Hall. The exhibit will feature a new artist every two months, with the first couple artists being selected by city staff. Following the first two artists, an open call to all Lake County artists will be advertised.
The second will be a tile mural planned for an outdoor setting. Artist Chris King proposed the side of Lakeport Senior Center’s Meals On Wheels thrift store as the installation site. However, other locations will be considered, as the property is not owned by the city.
King presented the project concepts to the committee. King Glazed ceramic tile will be used to create a mosaic.
The proposed location of the mural was also the location of a temporary chalkboard wall last August.
Several members of the committee commented on the success of the chalkboard wall, which aimed to garner positive feedback from the community by having members of the public write a response to “What I live about Lake County is ______.”
A desire to do a similar project was discussed, however volunteers who worked on the wall acknowledged the labor-intensive aspects of keeping it fresh and free of unwanted graffiti.
“The tiles are practically indestructible,” King said. “The colors never fade and are resistant to graffiti and vandalism.”
“The chalkboard wall concept of presenting positive messages about Lakeport and Lake County might be pursued through other means,” Wilda Shock said.
While the art exhibit will cost approximately $450 for display hardware, the mural is expected to between $15,000 and $16,000.
“Arts and culture add value and improve the quality of life in a community,” Wilda Shock explained during the group’s May 13 meeting, when the base concept of the projects were originally discussed.
