Mendo Mill and Lumber announced the recipients of the company’s 2015 scholarships. The recipients, each of whom will receive $1,000, are Brandon Morin of Lakeport, Justin Doty of Willits and Juan Huerta of Lakeport.
Morin will be attending the Santa Rosa Junior College Fire Academy, Doty will be attending California State University, Chico, and Huerta will be attending the University of California, Santa Cruz.
In announcing the awards Mendo Mill President Mike Mayfield said each of the winners exemplified the objectives of the unique scholarship program that was started several years ago.
The program is exclusively for employees of Mendo Mill, or for the sons or daughters of Mendo Mill employees. It specifically supports students who have successfully completed academic work at a community college or trade school, and are pursuing a four-year degree at a college, university or other professional institution such as a police academy.
“Our goal is to identify students who have demonstrated the focus and commitment to persevere in higher education, and assist them in realizing their dream of a four-year degree”, said Mayfield.
“In addition we want to recognize the great contributions of our employees at Mendo Mill by awarding the scholarships to either persons who are working for the company or are the sons or daughters of our employees”, he added. He said that Mendo Mill allocates $5,000.00 a year to fund up to five scholarships.
Mendo Mill, which operates home improvement stores and lumberyards in Ukiah, Clearlake, Lakeport, Willits and Fort Bragg, has a long tradition of supporting school programs and charitable organizations in Lake and Mendocino Counties. The company has contributed well over one million dollars to local charities in its 71-year history. More importantly, the company has often served as the catalyst to mobilize the community altruistically.
In 2009, when people were losing jobs and losing homes in the greatest economic decline since the Great Depression, Mendo Mill spearheaded a matching funds campaign that raised more than $170,000.00 in 60 days to benefit more than 20 local charities in Lake and Mendocino Counties.
For years Mendo Mil has raised money in its stores during the holiday season for Toys for Tots, and later this year Mendo Mill will enhance our program to support local high school athletics.
“We have long believed that our company does well by doing good,” said Mayfield.
