LAKEPORT >> The hearing of an appeal following the Lake County Planning Commission’s denial of proposed Kelseyville Dollar General was postponed once again.

The Lake County Board of Supervisors decided to push the date back for a second time after District 2 Supervisor Jeff Smith announced he would be absent from the August 18 meeting. The original date, July 21, was rescheduled because of conflicts, as well.

Rob Brown, supervisor for District 5, said he plans to recuse himself from the decision, as he owns property that may be affected.

On May 28 the Lake County Planning Commission unanimously denied the major permit application of Cross Development for a 9,100 square foot Dollar General, to be constructed near Kelseyville High School.

The proposed site of the Dollar General was two parcels located on Douglas Road and Main Street, located directly across from Kelseyville High School.

Multiple changes to the proposal were suggested by the Lake County Community Development Department. Recommendations included reducing the number of parking spots from 30 to 25, limiting product delivery times, building sidewalks and installing landscaping, Senior Planner Michalyn DelValle said.

Approximately 40 citizens, business owners and officials were present to discuss their concerns regarding the project. All comments were in opposition.

The Planning Commission cited several concerns in issuing the denial, including traffic and proximity to the school. The commission also pointed out that the Dollar General in Clearlake Oaks had made little effort to contribute to the community.

Dollar General is a client of Cross Development, which would construct and own the building for the store to rent. It was Cross Development that appealed the decision.

Commissioners Bob Malley and Gladys Rosehill cited safety issues that resulted from the construction of a Dollar General in Clearlake Oaks, while Commissioners Gil Schoux and Joseph Sullivan said they would support the project if it were at a different location.
