LAKEPORT >> The Konocti Rod and Gun Club and the Lake County 4-H Club are teaming up to hold the 11th annual Family Fun Shoot on Aug. 1 at the shooting range across from Highland Springs Park at the end of Highland Springs Road south of Lakeport. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
While similar events are held by other groups throughout the state, many charge from $10 to $75 a person to participate. In addition to being free, the Family Fun Shoot sponsors provided all the ammunition and firearms at no charge. One-on-one coaching at each shooting position maintains a safe and friendly learning environment. The event is overseen by a certified range safety officer at all times and there are multiple instructors coaching the individual stations. There are dozens of targets placed on the range from 25 feet to 200 yards. There are rubber and steel reactive targets, hanging plate steel and containers filled with flour.
On the line, there will be 10 different shooting stations to visit with a variety of firearms offered, including .22-caliber single-shot rifles, .22-caliber semi-auto rifles, center fire bolt-action rifles, center fire semi-auto rifles, black powder rifles and 12- and 20-gauge shotguns. One station even has a target retrieval system that brings your target back so you can take it home.
This is a family-oriented event. Parents and children alike are welcome to safely shoot in a controlled environment.
There will be free safety literature on safe firearms handling and safe firearms storage in the home. There also will be free gun locks for all participants.
The Konocti Rod and Gun Club range is located at the end of Highland Springs Road across from Highland Springs Park.
Lunch is available at the event. A hot dog meal (hot dog, chips and water) is available for $5. Ice cold water will be available for $1 a bottle.
