Expression
I would like to speak, in this delayed fashion, with Carolyn Hawley, of Nice.
I hope you will occasionally check back on Letters to the Editor, Ms. Hawley, to see if they may have improved. I see by yours of 7-9-15 that you know exactly what is meant by letters to the editor of a newspaper and will (I hope) write many of them in the future, for I also see that you know how to express yourself.
I am an intellectual, by which I mean a la my much-used Merriam-Webster, “given to study, reflection, and speculation.” It doesn’t mean intelligent; lots of intellectuals are pretty dumb — I, for one. My memory is strictly third-class. I can’t spell for sour apples; e.g., I had to check the dictionary to be certain how to spell both “intelligent” and “third-class”. That’s because I write things that I mean later to type in Gregg shorthand. Also because I’m 92 years old. I sometimes wonder if I’m getting Al Hammer’s disease. There! I had to check to see if disease was “dis” or “des”.
Thanks for giving me a chance to talk about myself. I mean, you were talking about me in your letter, so I reckoned I was at least partly the subject. The rest of the guys — Jim Hall, Guff Worth, Bill Kettenhofen, Kevin Bracken, (and gals) Wendy White, Carolyn Hawley — there are many, many of us, and all write stuff that many readers (though not always the same readers) find interesting.
I am a little word-conscious. I took note of your use of the word “tirade,” which I think I have never seen in any of our letters, unless perhaps in yours of present interest, and even that may not qualify; for a tirade is supposed to be protracted, and yours is short.
Anyhow, ‘bye. Think feel-good thoughts.

A sin
Betty Chirco seems to be saying that there is a conflict in tone between the Old Testament and the New Testament (RB 7/16) and that she favors the gentler tone of the New Testament. This would explain why she discounts the Old Testament statements concerning homosexuality.
Because Ms. Chirco has a positive view on gay marriage she must not realize that the New Testament specifically singles out homosexuality as a sin (Romans 1:26, 27).
At any rate I recommend I Corinthians 15:34, “Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.” This admonition is not addressed to the heathen, but to those who call themselves children of God.
