BUCKINGHAM >> Defending champion Matt Wotherspoon, an All-Coastal Mountain golfer who is about to enter his sophomore year at Kelseyville High School, won his second consecutive Buckingham Summer Junior Golf Championship in runaway fashion on Monday at Buckingham Golf and Country Club.

Wotherspoon opened play and carded a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine to grab a 10-stroke lead over his closest pursuers. He repeated the feat on the inward nine, shooting another 38 to record a 4-over-par 76. Wotherspoon recorded two birdies during the course of his round.

Hunter Blair of Cobb Mountain, a 12-year-old who has been active on the Lake County junior golf scene for the past four years, captured the 12-13 boys’ age division and finished in second place overall by posting an 18-hole score of 101.

Samuel Long of Buckingham, a golfer on the Clear Lake High School team, won the 16-17 boys’ division with a 119. His teammate at Clear Lake, 16-year-old Dylan McGuire of Lakeport, turned in a score of 127. Jacob Lopez of Finley finished in fifth place overall after recording a 138. Lopez will be starting his freshman year at Clear Lake High School later this month.

In girls’ action, 12-year-old Sarah Parlee of Lakeport carded 123 to win her flight and the overall girls’ championship In second place was 13-year-old Madison Witt of Clear Lake Riviera.

In the 8-9 boys’ division, Charles Johnson of Kelseyville shot a 31 for six holes and came in first. A.J. Marshall of Hidden Valley Lake was the runner-up with a 44.

A pair of 6-year-olds were entered in the 6-7 boys’ flight. Jace Beard of Lakeport shot a six-hole total of 39 to take home the title, finishing three strokes ahead of Billy Witt of Clear Lake Riviera. Witt recorded a 42.

The Buckingham Summer Junior Golf Championship was sponsored by Buckingham Golf and Country Club, the Buckingham Tournament Players Club, the Buckingham Ladies Club, and the Buckingham Niners.

Many of these same junior golfers are headed to Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain today for the playing of the 22nd annual Lake County Junior Golf Championship. Wotherspoon is the two-time defending champion and will be playing in the first pairing along with Blair. They tee off at 8 a.m.

Other tee times for those entered in the Lake County Junior are 8:08 a.m. (Long and McGuire), 8:16 a.m. (Lopez and Mike Camacho), 8:24 a.m. (Parlee and Madison Witt) and 8:32 a.m. (Johnson and Billy Witt).

Course marshals are Jack Lucich, John Flynn, Mike Blakey, Armond Urbano, Bob Burnezky and Tom Salie.
