Kelseyville >> Saturday, Aug. 15 is National Model Aviation Day and the Clearlake Modelers, Lake County’s radio control flying club, will have an open house at their flying field at 2900 Highway 29, one mile north of Kit’s Korner. Admission is free and is open to the public. This is an opportunity to come out and learn about this fascinating hobby. There will be flying demonstrations of airplanes, helicopters, gliders and quad-rotors (drones), a demonstration of R/C Aerial Combat around 9:30 a.m., and a static display of scale planes including WWII Warbirds.
This event is being held in conjunction with the Wounded Warrior Project. The vision statement of this great organization is “To foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.” Their purpose is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members in many ways: to help injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.
There will be hamburgers and hot dogs to purchase along with raffles, opportunities to fly actual model airplanes with the aid of an instructor and the chance to feel like you are in a quad-rotor (drone) looking out using First Person View goggles. Proceeds from these events will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Gates open at 9 a.m., entry is free and the event runs until around 1 p.m. Bring a lawn chair to guarantee a place to sit, but leave your pets and alcohol at home. Due to the outdoor venue and the high fire danger, smoking will be restricted to within your vehicle. If strong winds are a factor the event may be canceled.
