YANKTON, S.D. >> Former Middletown High School and University of Kansas standout golfer Doug Quinones beat Andre Metzger in a one-hole playoff to win the 42nd annual Hillcrest Pro-Am, part of the Dakotas Tour, on Sunday at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club.
The win earned Quinones a $21,000 payday as he carded a final-round 3-under-par 69. He finished with an overall 19-under-par total of 269.
Quinones birdied the playoff hole while Metzger had to settle for par.
“I can’t even describe how it feels,” Quinones said of his win, according to a story appearing in the Press & Dakotan. “It feels great.”
Quinones, Metzger and Zenon Brown all found themselves within one shot of each other with two holes to play in regulation. Quinones had to make a par save on the 17th hole after chipping his ball into a tree and failing to reach the green.
Quinones thought he had won the tournament in regulation when his chip shot on No. 18 almost went in. In fact, Quinones thought he had made it and turned around to celebrate until he saw the ball just short of the cup, at which point he grabbed his face in dismay.
“I thought it was in and actually turned away when it was a couple of feet from the hole, then I looked back and saw it not in,” Quinones told Press & Dakotan writer Michael Hammond.
