KELSEYVILLE >> After receiving Provision 2 status in the 2013-14 school year, the Kelseyville Board of Trustees voted unanimously to provide free breakfast and lunch for all students that attend the Kelseyville Unified School District. Kelseyville will continue offering free breakfast and lunch for the upcoming school year which starts on September 8. The District leadership felt it was important that all students receive a well balanced meal in the morning and afternoon to help students nutritionally as well as academically.

Families who are new to the district will be provided with a lunch application to be completed for claim purposes.

Students will be provided healthy, made from scratch meals and will enjoy fresh produce purchased from local farmers in Lake County as well as our school gardens. Kelseyville Unified has had an active Farm to School Program for the past 9 years and has done business with G bar G Ranch, Seely’s Farm Stand, Jim Leonardis Organics and Dorn Vineyards. As the Farm to School program continues to grow more farmers are showing interest in doing business with school districts.

Kelseyville’s current director, Michelle Malm, will be retiring September 30, but will continue assisting with the Farm to School program and working in the Riviera Elementary School Garden. Helen Finch will be working in the Kelseyville Elementary School Garden, Cherie Seely will continue to run the Mt. Vista School Garden and Donnelle McCallister will continue her amazing work with the new Kelseyville High School Farm, Greenhouses and Garden. In supporting student’s educational experience, the food service department and Ag department offer district field trips to visit the new farm, greenhouse and garden with a visit to the school central kitchen and ending with making their own pizza for lunch accompanied by a fresh salad, fruit & milk. The mission for the Farm to School program as well as all of our school gardens is to help students learn where their food comes from and how it’s grown.

If you have questions regarding the food program, Farm to School or if you child has dietary restrictions please contact the new Director of Food Services, Michelle Borghesani at 279-2519 or e-mail mborghesani@kvusd.org.
