LAKEPORT >> Ankle injuries to forwards Shyanne Chapin and Cierra Moreno limited Clear Lake’s effectiveness on offense as the Cardinals battled Technology High School of Rohnert Park through 80 minutes of scoreless non-league girls’ soccer action on Wednesday afternoon in Lakeport.
“It’s better than a loss I guess,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said of the 0-0 tie.
Chapin sustained her injury in Clear Lake’s 3-1 home loss to Rancho Cotate on Tuesday and will be lost to the team until early September, according to Larrea. Moreno went down with 15 minutes left to play against Technology, leaving the Cardinals with a bare minimum of 11 players.
“And they really gutted it out,” Larrea said of his remaining players.
While both teams had a handful of opportunities to break the tie, Technology came the closest to scoring with about 10 minutes left to play.
“They had one ball hit the post and how it didn’t bounce in I don’t know,” Larrea said.
Brooklyn Jenkins made her varsity debut as Clear Lake’s keeper and recorded her first shutout.
“She made a lot of good saves,” Larrea said.
Other defensive standouts were Regina Faalelea and Mina Werner, according to Larrea.
“Mina keeps us organized back there and never comes off the field,” Larrea said.
Clear Lake (0-1-1) is right back at it on Friday against El Molino at 3 p.m. in the opening round of the Ukiah Tournament at Ukiah High School. The Cardinals play two more games on Saturday — 9 a.m. against Healdsburg and 1 p.m. against Willits.
