HEALDSBURG >> Kelseyville’s bid to provide first-year coach Erick Larsen with his first high school coaching win will have to wait at least a couple more weeks as the Knights fell 20-13 to the Healdsburg Greyhounds on Friday night at Recreation Park.
Kelseyville (0-2) had a chance to tie or win the game in the final seconds but Healdsburg (1-1) held firm on a goal-line stand, stopping the Knights at the 1-yard line after a run by Manny Sanchez on fourth-and-goal came up short of the end zone.
“It was close but he was short,” Larsen said of the Knights’ final play.
Sanchez had a big night with 183 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
The game was tied 6-6 at the half.
Healdsburg scored twice in the third quarter while Kelseyville scored on a Asa Peters 2-yard run, making it 20-13 entering the final period. Peters finished 76 yards on 12 carries.
“It was a way better effort,” Larsen said of the Knights’ second game of the season, that following a 13-7 loss to De Anza a week ago. “The kids stayed together and worked together.”
Kelseyville gained 318 of its 357 yards on the ground.
