LAKEPORT >> Dominick Mendez scored on a 45-yard run and also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass on Friday evening as Clear Lake High School’s junior varsity football team opened the season with a 25-0 home win over Durham.
Mendez put Clear Lake ahead to stay in the second quarter with his long scoring run. The Cardinals made it 12-0 before halftime on a 21-yard pass from Alex Adams to Chris White.
Clear Lake added to its lead with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Rodrigo Lapercio scored on an 8-yard run and White punched one in from two yards out. Rubin Garcia kicked an extra point.
Mendez led the Cardinals with 77 yards on 10 carries. Adams completed four of eight passes for 66 yards.
Defensive lineman Justin Cantrell anchored the defense with four solo tackles and four assists. Mendez piled up the return yardage by taking his interception back 65 yards and a fumble 22 yards. He actually scored on the interception but a penalty called against Clear Lake during the return wiped out the touchdown.
