MIDDLETOWN >> Jess DeSilva’s seven kills and three blocks powered the Middletown Mustangs past Upper Lake 25-14, 25-10, 25-17 in non-league varsity volleyball action Tuesday night in Middletown.
“Our hitting was better and our passing was better,” Middletown coach Jennifer Breiner said. “We had 21 kills in three games.”
The Mustangs (2-1) also received six kills and two aces from Abby Aden. Angel Stith had nine digs for Upper Lake (0-4) and Christina Wilson had eight. Wilson also served for 10 points with one ace and one kill.
Upper Lake did win the junior varsity match 25-10, 25-19.

At Calistoga, Lower Lake senior forward Karina Perez scored two goals and had an assist in a non-league win over Calistoga.
Dakota Welch and Susanna Rico also scored for the Trojans (1-1).
Ukiah 5, Clear Lake 0
At Ukiah, the Clear Lake Cardinals turned in a strong defensive effort but fell to the Ukiah Wildcats in non-league action.
“It was good for us to play against a team of that quality,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said of the senior-dominated Ukiah club, a Division I team. “Our defense played great.”
Clear Lake (1-6-2) trailed only 2-0 at the half, the result of two Ukiah corner kicks. The Wildcats gradually pulled away in the second half.
Larrea said Brooklyn Jenkins, the Cardinals’ keeper, wing Nicole Duncan, and sweeper Ciera Moreno all turned in strong efforts on the defensive end.
