UPPER LAKE >> The Kelseyville Knights had 13 days between their second and third matches of the 2015 season, but no rust was apparent during a 25-13, 25-14, 25-13 non-league varsity volleyball victory over the Upper Lake Cougars on Thursday evening in Upper Lake.
Kelseyville (3-0), off since its Aug. 27 win at Mendocino, improved to 3-0 on the road.
While happy with the straight-set win, Kelseyville coach Donelle McCallister said the Knights are still a long way from where they want to be and need to be as they prepare to enter North Central League I competition.
“We were OK, but we really need to work on some things that we have to do better,” McCallister said with an eye toward several of the top teams in the NCL I.
McCallister said the Knights will have a better idea where they stand after competing in the Healdsburg Tournament on Saturday when they will face several large schools.
“We’re going to be challenged on Saturday when we go to Healdsburg,” she said.
There weren’t many challenges for Kelseyville on Thursday night against the Cougars (0-5). Dominating the match was junior setter Riley Goff, who led the team with 12 aces and 19 assists. She also had 10 digs and seven kills.
“She’s pretty consistent,” McCallister said of the veteran All-Leaguer.
Two other Knights — Carli Mendonca (10 kills) and Shalyn Keithly (seven kills) — also turned in solid performances.
“Shalyn had a real good night,” McCallister said.
Upper Lake (0-5) was led by Christina Wilson with eight digs, two kills and one ace, and Natalie Karlsson with eight digs and one kill.
Kelseyville won the junior varsity match 26-24, 25-20. Leaders for the Knights were Tristin Beck with four kills and four digs, Kaleigh Nunn with four digs and six assists, Emma Larsen with six digs and three assists, Cerina Baca with three digs and two kills, and Megan Mills with three digs. For Upper Lake, Adrianna Saldana had seven digs and two kills while teammate Briana Binns had four digs and two aces.
Upper Lake hosts Fort Bragg on Tuesday.
