Don McCloud will be missed

The Lakeport Fire Protection District and its Board of Directors extend their deepest sympathies to the Don McCloud family due to his passing.

We are grateful for Don’s 15 years of service as a Volunteer Firefighter and Captain, as well as Don’s years as a member of the Board of Directors.

Don’s service to the community he loved is very appreciated. He will be truly missed.

Water and fairness

When I see articles noting how much water has been saved (i.e, not used) I am pleased, but increasingly more cynical.

To be able to say “saved” infers measurement of some sort and that, to me, suggests that the burden of “saving” is being borne by those users who have meters. I suspect that while probably everyone tries to save, if usage is not measured, no one really knows the real amount. And to (really) find out is going to be a costly process.

I think it is time to prod our legislature about speeding up the implementation of the water actions passed in 2014. We badly need to treat California’s water as a public resource (as does every other state), do away with “water rights” that may have been reasonable 125 or 150 years ago, but are now both unfair and obsolete in terms of the way a state of 33 million people must optimize the usage of a precious commodity. And yes, increasing waste water processing is the most economical way to increase water supply.

We also need to iron out legislation that will let pricing be a force in usage and provide a bit for additional facilities and maintenance to reduce the massive leakage. My PG&E bill tells me they have no qualms about tier pricing. Also we need to establish the responsibility of those causing major subsidence to bear the cost of road (etc.) repair rather than pass it on to we taxpayers.

Religious freedom

I admit that I am “no lawyer,” but I have it on good authority that Rowan County, Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis should not have been jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples because Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and the other four liberal Justices acted lawlessly when they ruled in favor of same-sex marriage back in June.

I point this out because it reinforces what I said in my June 24 letter: “In the end, religious freedom will be sacrificed. This will eventually become a worldwide event with many parallels to the religious persecutions of the Middle Ages.”
