MIDDLETOWN >> Berean Christian jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back while thumping the Middletown Mustangs 49-22 in a non-league varsity football game on Friday night at Bill Foltmer Field.

“We just got out-athleted for the second week in a row,” Middletown coach Bill Foltmer said of his team’s second straight lopsided setback. A week ago the Mustangs fell 41-19 at Salesian.

“They were just faster and quicker than us,” Foltmer said.

Middletown quarterback Connor Armstrong passed for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Coleman Drew rushed for 97 yards on 19 carries in his season debut, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep Middletown from a rare 0-2 start.

Berean Christian (2-1) led 28-8 at halftime and 49-22 after three quarters.

Middletown’s touchdowns came on a Ty Chorjel 1-yard run in the second quarter and a pair of Armstrong to Tyler Fleenor touchdown passes in the third quarter on throws of 9 and 75 yards. Fleenor finished with four catches for 108 yards.

Chorjel also ran in a two-point conversion for the Mustangs, who close out their preseason schedule next Friday at home against El Molino (0-2).

Middletown did win the junior varsity game, beating Berean Christian 27-13. The Mustang JVs are now 1-1 on the season.
