UPPER LAKE >> The South Fork Cubs and triple-digit heat provided the 1-2 punch that floored the Upper Lake Cougars, 7-1, in non-league varsity girls’ soccer action on Friday afternoon in Upper Lake.
“It was hot, it was definitely hot out there. They were all hurting … both teams,” Upper Lake coach Mandy Robbins said.
The Cubs turned up the heat even more with a first-half barrage of six goals to take a 6-0 lead. The Cougars (0-3) finally got on the scoreboard in the second half thanks to an unassisted goal from Julia Mooney.
“Our defense just fell apart today,” Robbins said. “My girls just couldn’t get it together in the first half. We played better in the second half.”
Upper Lake opened the game with one player on its bench and finished with the minimum 11.
