Debate

To do what it purports to do, that is to get at truth, debate would have to be conducted like a game of chess, each participant being allowed up to several hours or even days to respond to a comment. It could best be carried on by letter. For one to respond to a statement with what he knows, what he can learn, and what he believes, he needs time to consider, to remember facts he may have temporarily forgotten, perhaps to look up matter to determine or confirm an opinion, perhaps even to debate a contingent issue. This would take time, and popular values do not rate truth so high.

Dean Sparks, Lucerne

Not even poetic

Mr. Pomeroy’s “letters” of opinion are all inherently ambiguous, with no substance. They don’t even rate as poetry, which for some reason isn’t allowed in “Letters to the Editor.”

Considering the letters of length, many aren’t proficient in basic sentence and paragraph structure, focus or logic. Something like: “Colin’s blank server // No corpse, no crime?” Needs six or seven more syllables to make a fine Haiku (poem).

Editor’s note: Poetry is allowed on the opinion page, just not poetry under copyright reprinted without written permission.
