State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson toured the Red Cross evacuation shelter during a visit last week. The shelter was established for the Valley Fire at Grace Church in Kelseyville.

Red Cross employees spoke with Torlakson about the daily operations at the shelter during this disaster. Mike Conroy, Red Cross site supervisor, informed him that there are fewer evacuees since repopulation, but the number increases during the day as people visit for meals and to pick up supplies.

Torlakson praised the community by saying, “I am overwhelmed with the fantastic work of this community and all of the relief help that the Red Cross has provided.”

Brock Falkenberg, Lake County Superintendent of Schools, accompanied Torlakson. Falkenberg addressed the evacuees and said, “Middletown schools reopening is a beacon of light for our communities, a light of hope that we will rebuild. We are Lake County strong.”
