KELSEYVILLE >> Victor Lopez scored with less than a minute to play and the Middletown Mustangs moved atop the North Central League I boys’ soccer standings with a 3-2 victory over the previously undefeated Kelseyville Knights on Thursday in Kelseyville.
Middletown improved to 3-0-1 in league play while Kelseyville dropped to 4-1 and 6-1-1 overall.
“Obviously for us it’s a big win,” Middletown coach Luis Chairez said. “Kelseyville is one of the stronger teams in the league. I feel pretty good about my kids. I’m proud of them.”
Lopez scored in each half for the Mustangs while Jorge Morales, who assisted on the game-winning goal, scored early in the second half to give Middletown a 2-1 lead.
Kelseyville’s goals went to Enrique Cacho in the first half and to Elias Alvarez in the second half.
“Their defense played well, especially in the midfield,” Kelseyville coach Eduardo Ledesma said.
Kelseyville is the defending league champion.
Middletown returns to action Tuesday in Middletown while Kelseyville has a bye.
