LAKEPORT >> In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sutter Lakeside Hospital will provide free mammograms for uninsured women during the month of October. Statistically, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and breast cancer accounts for one in three of all cancers in women.
“Mammograms for uninsured women cost $75 last year. This year, we’re proud to collaborate with the Sutter Health system to provide free mammograms to uninsured women. We want early detection to be available to all women, regardless of insurance roadblocks,” said Siri Nelson, Chief Administrative Officer of Sutter Lakeside Hospital.
Last year, 11 women came for a mammogram at the special price, while 268 women in total got mammograms, according to Sheila Gatton, lead mammographer for Sutter Lakeside Hospital.
“It’s best to catch breast cancer early, as it’s a very aggressive form of cancer,” said Jose Aponte, director of Imaging & Cardiology. “Regular screening is an important part of early detection.”
In order to qualify for a free mammogram, you must:
• Be older than the age of 40
• Be uninsured
• Make an appointment in advance
• Understand that the mammogram is for screening purposes only
• Have not had a recent biopsy or breast surgery
• Have not had a mammogram in at least one year
