LAKEPORT >> The Lake County Hero Project will provide free backpacks, offer Sesame Street resources for children of Valley Fire victims and feature a superhero photo booth at the 2015 Heroes of Health and Safety Fair.

The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake County Fairgrounds. The free, family-friendly event will offer resources for fire victims and safety demonstrations, including a “Jaws of Life” demonstration, medical helicopter landings and liftoffs, and a SWAT Unit Armored Vehicle.

Other highlights include free car seat safety inspections and replacements, free bike helmets, a chance to win raffle prizes including kids’ bikes, and opportunities to mingle with safety characters McGruff and Smokey the Bear.

Sutter Lakeside Hospital and the Lake County Fire Chief’s Association are the major sponsors for this event. More than 40 Lake County health and safety focused organizations will host booths and provide information to community members about local services ranging from disaster preparedness and electrical safety to obesity awareness. The Hero Project remains a dedicated sponsor of this annual event.

The Hero Project challenges parents to be superheroes to their children.

“Every child needs a hero,” said Hero Project Director Robyn Bera, “and we’re helping parents become that very hero by challenging them to read more, unplug more, and engage more with their children. Be a hero! Join the Hero Project and take our POP15 challenge.”

Register for the Hero Project and accept the POP15 challenge at www.lakecountyheroproject.com. Any adult that influences children aged 0-8 can join for free. Take the POP15 challenge and POP (Parent on Purpose) this school year by setting goals. Read together at least five times a week for 15 minutes a day. Every family who completes the POP15 challenge will win a free book for every child under age 8 in their home. In addition, children under age 5 will win a subscription to Imagination Library. One family will receive the Grand Prize of a home children’s library valued at $150.
